A Quick Overview

How Does Die Sinking EDM Work?

Die sinking EDM, also known as sinker or ram EDM, is a specialized thermal machining technique that uses custom-shaped electrodes to form complex 3D cavities in conductive metals without mechanical force.

Virtually any electrically conductive material, including hardened steels, copper alloys, and titanium, can be processed using this high-precision method.

During the process, a custom-machined electrode, typically graphite or copper, is shaped into the inverse of the target geometry and positioned close to the workpiece submerged in dielectric fluid. Controlled electrical spark discharges across the microscopic gap generate intense localized heat, melting and eroding the material to reproduce the exact shape of the electrode.

Because the electrode never makes physical contact with the metal, die sinking EDM eliminates tool pressure and mechanical deformation. This makes it ideal for producing detailed injection molds, stamping dies, blind cavities, and complex internal contours requiring extreme accuracy and tight tolerances.
